The causes of Gender Biased Sex Selection (GBSS) are well known. However, the unfolding consequences of this harmful practice are still being studied. We are thankful to the UNFPA India Country Office for having agreed to our proposal to research three themes focusing on the correlates and consequences of GBSS. These themes focus on: the role of class and education in explaining India’s gender imbalance trajectory, the present and future contours of the marriage squeeze, and the relationship between crime rates and sex ratio imbalances.

Population and Development South-South Cooperation Centre of Excellence Launched in Beijing during the Belt and Road Forum

Beijing, May 15, 2017 - The Population and Development South-South Cooperation Center of Excellence was officially launched at the China Population and Development Research Center (CPDRC) during the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation in Beijing.

Madhya Pradesh, 5th May 2017:  The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and SBI Foundation, today launched Samridhhi in Chattarpur District of Madhya Pradesh. As part of UNFPA’s 12-nation Action for Adolescent Girl initiative, the first phase of the project will benefit over 3500 adolescent girls across approximately 150 villages in Bijawar and Badamalhara blocks. In the subsequent phase, Samridhhi will be scaled up to cover several other blocks and districts in the state.

Comprehensive Reproductive Health Education (CRHE) for Youth in Sri Lanka

1 in 4 people in Sri Lanka are between the ages of 15 and 29 years - a total of 4.7 million in 2014 and in the next 15 years, 5.5 million more Sri Lankans will be under the age of 15 years. Preparing these young people for the transition to adulthood is a challenge. Overall, knowledge on basic Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH) among young people in Sri Lanka is not up to standard level.
